Nuclear fusion promises an abundant, inexhaustible source of clean energy without the greenhouse gas emissions of fossil fuels or the radioactive waste of nuclear fission. The last few years have seen enormous progress towards functional fusion using lasers for inertial confinement. Scientists at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California (LLNL) managed to produce, in December 2022, for the first time, a nuclear fusion reaction that released more energy than it used. This critical milestone paves the way for the future of clean energy generation. This panel discussion aims to provide a short overview of activities toward laser inertial confinement fusion and reality checks on global expectations. The speakers come from academia, large governmental organizations, and fusion startups from around the world to provide a diverse perspective.

With their Optica Women Scholars Program, Optica provides exceptional women students worldwide with funding, mentorship, and leadership training, in order to propel them toward success in their careers. This year at CLEO, the Optica Women Scholars Conference is being launched, bringing the scholars together for the first time. Our Marketing Group Leader, Gabrielle Thomas, will act as the MC for the event, and will participate in a "Quick-Fire Mentoring" session. At Menlo we are proud to support the careers of all genders, and are delighted to be part of the program.
